I'm working on an art project with pencils, but i cant get the background to look smooth?

Its a still life drawing and I shaded in the background/wall (layers of graphite, shading, etc) but it looks so patchy and uneven. i tried going over the lighter parts again to even it out, but it still looks bad. Is there a way i can smooth out the uneven graphite?
