What programming knowledge is required to develop a mobile phone app?

being a engineering student i want to create mobile apps since i have a passion for it but i do not know where to start..i mean what programming skills or tools is required to build and test apps completely from developing to selling it on stores for iOS,ovi or android platforms and others out there in the market..can someone please help me out..thanks in advance
